Manitoba nurses are now informed about the no wage increase policy of the province. The agreement indicated that the said policy will be effective in the first two years of a 3 years work. The starting salary for nurses is $62,508. On the contrary of this policy, the 11,000 nurses will receive a one-time lump-sum payment which is equivalent to 2% of their annual pay. And a 4% increase will be given to them on the third year of their work. The proposed contract also discusses the provision of 2% increase of nurses’ pay once they reach 20 years of service.

Nurses did not sign the contract since the end of September. According to Finance Minister Rosann Wowchuk, Our goal was to protect front-line health services while managing very difficult budgets.

Wowchuk added that the Manitoba Nurses Union now have a reasonable deal which took a long and difficult process, that protects front-line services and provides government needed short-term fiscal predictability while maintaining the long-term sustainability and competitiveness. [via cbc.ca]
