Services of Male Nurses: Not Feasible

Tamil Nadu government is certain in their decision of not accepting any male candidate for the diploma course in nursing. The Madras high court discharged a court order petition demanding the new norms; this became the judicial wiggle last December 7, 2008. Ten per cent of the available seats to male candidates till 2007-08 was allotted by the government and they have agreed to make the diploma an all-girl program from 2008-09 subsequent to the beginning of a new syllabus by the Indian Nursing Council. The application for admittance of U Ashad Ali was discarded by the health and family welfare department last November 2008. The decision on the view that discrimination on sex grounds violated the fundamental rights preserved in the Constitution was tested.

They believed that male nursing assistants were very much in-demand in different hospitals.
The government attested that male nurses were needed only in a few places like jail, ortho department, mental health hospitals, and operation theatres. Sufficient male nurses will be in service until 2045. Based from the new syllabus of the Indian Nursing Council, midwifery made an obligatory condition to finish the course. Female nurses do not prefer to be assisted by male nurses during delivery, antenatal, post-natal and in labour ward. They stated that it is not feasible to instruct the training to male candidates. According to Justice K Suguna, without the midwifery training, male nurse cannot complete the course. Nursing services must coordinate the health needs of the people. If there’s no need of male nurses, the assessment of the government in limiting admission to female candidates alone must be accepted.  It is not in doubt that sufficient number of male nurses is still obtainable.
